24 June 2022 – TT Circuit Assen – Netherlands
Here in Assen the weather often affects the race weekend and this year the tradition has been respected. In fact, the first day of testing was held with the track wet by violent rain showers, fallen until a few minutes before the start of the morning session.
In free practice 1 John went very fast and in fact managed to get the third time. Ayumu ranked seventeenth, accomplice also to his not perfect state of health, consequential to the fracture of the collarbone. In Free Practice 2 temperatures dropped by a few degrees and on the ground were recorded 22ºC, While in the air 20ºC. It stopped raining long before the start of the session and this allowed the drivers to get on track with much better conditions. John improved his chronometric reference by about 2.5 seconds, setting a time of 1’50.386. With this performance our driver is eleventh in the combined standings, with a delay from the leader D. Munoz of 0.895 s.
Here are the words of John, Ayumu and our Team Owner Max Biaggi.
JOHN MCPHEE : “I enjoyed myself a lot today. It is the first time for me on the Husqvarna in the rain condition because in the past races when it has been raining was when I had my time off with my injury, so I was a little bit curious to see how I would be in the rain. Honestly, the feeling was really good from the beginning, we did not need to change too much. Lap by lap I came faster and more confident. We finished the FP1 in the top 3, while FP2 was more wet and we were P2 until the last 10 minutes. In the end the track came dry really fast and I had a lot more to offer but I exited the box a little bit too late so we were not able to be further up the timesheets at the end. Overall the feeling was good so this is the most important thing for free practice. We are excited for tomorrow in all conditions.”
AYUMU SASAKI : “It was a decent day in wet conditions and I felt good on the bike. I took a little bit fewer risks than I usually do as I still have the injury so I took it easy. Looks like tomorrow is a dry condition, so today I was just focussing on my pace and my feeling. Maybe Sunday will be wet again and for that, we were focussing on the setup. Overall I felt good and I am happy. We will focus on having a good qualifying tomorrow and let’s see what the weather is going to be on Sunday.”
MAX BIAGGI – TEAM OWNER : “The rain was the protagonist of this Friday, here in Assen. Unfortunately, the weather conditions change quickly, and this makes the track more or less fast. John was very fast in FP1, then when the track conditions improved, he found himself a bit behind. Ayumu, on the other hand, began cautiously his tests, only to get a great improvement in FP2. In view of tomorrow’s qualifying, we have to work hard, to find the way to hit the best setting in all track conditions.”
