07 November 2020 – Circuit Ricardo Tormo – Spain
In the Grand Prix of Europe, that will take place tomorrow on the Ricardo Tormo, Alonso will start from the second row in fifth position. A little bit far behind results to be Romano, who tomorrow will start from the sixteenth place.
Even today was characterized by rain. Indeed the free practice 3 took place with the track completely wet and this has prevented an improvement of the times. For this reason, thanks to the excellent times realized yesterday in the free practice 2, both Romano and Alonso gained direct access to the Q2.
With 16 laps completed in the FP3, Alonso obtained the time of 1’51.813. Romano instead in the last free practice did 18 laps and he obtained as best lap 1’50.708.
Right before the beginning of the qualifying 2 it started to rain heavily. Thus, the pilots had to face a further difficulty, since the preceding three free practices took place with a wet track, but without the presence of the rain. For this reason throughout the session of qualifying a lot of pilots have fallen, among them there was Alonso. He incurred in two crash, of which the first in turn 4 and the at few minutes from the end of the session in turn 2. 6 are the laps done in the Q2 and the best time has been realized at the third lap, in 1’53.179. Alonso has a gap from the poleman J. McPhee of 0.927 s.
Some further difficulty throughout the qualifying for Romano. He gained direct access to the Q2 with an excellent third time, but during the 15 minutes of the session he did not manage to have a good feeling with his FR 250GP and this has prevented him to obtain a good time. 8 are the laps done by Romano, with 1’54.6585 as best lap, sealed at the fourth lap. He results to have a gap from the first position of 2.433 s.
Here are the words of the protagonists of these qualifying.
Alonso Lopez: “I am happy with the outcome of today, because I think that we have worked really well and we managed to gain direct access to the Q2. Throughout the third lap of qualifying I could not see very well, because I had some water inside the helmet. Tomorrow we will start in an very good position, but we have to do a good warm up in order to find the pace for the race. I end up the day with a lot of confidence.”
Romano Fenati:”I am not happy about the outcome of this qualifying, since we could have done much better. Now we can not do much about that and we have to wait for tomorrow. It will be necessary to do a good start and to attack from the beginning, in order to go back to the leading positions.”
Max Biaggi – Team Owner: “The bad weather continues to characterize the weekend on the Ricardo Tormo. Alonso even with two falls has been rather fast in the qualifying and tomorrow will start from the second row. On this track a good starting position is rather important. I am sorry for Romano who, as often unfortunately happens, did not manage to finalize in the qualifying the amazing times realized in the free practice. I hope that there will be the conditions to do a nice comeback tomorrow.”
