26 September 2020 – Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya – Spain
On the starting grid of the Grand Prix of Catalunya Romano will be in fifteenth position and Alonso in sixteenth position. There results do not show off the real potential expressed by our two pilots this Saturday.
Romano in the Free Practice 3 has improved his best time of the two previous rounds of free practice by 0.465 s, succeeding to qualify himself in second place in the free practice combined ranking and thus he had direct access to the qualifying 2. Throughout the qualifying he did 7 laps, sealing his best time at the sixth lap. He showed off a very consistent pace, realizing 5 laps around the 1’49 low. 1’49.085 is his best lap, with a gap from the poleman T. Arbolino of 1.323 s. As said previously, this performance shows only partially the performances of our pilot. Indeed Romano did all the laps without using any slipstream, that on a fast track like the one of Barcelona is crucial.
For what concerns Alonso the free practice unfortunately started with a slip, that has slowed down a lot the work to approach the qualifying. Unfortunately due to the fall the FR 250GP has reported rather evident damages and only the amazing intervention of his Team has allowed him to be back on track before the end of the round. Alonso resulted to be in twenty-third position in the free practice combined ranking. Thus he took part to the qualifying 1 in which he dominated the field, qualifying himself first with the time of 1’48.894. It needs to be said that Alonso has succeeded to use the slipstream of a consistent group of pilots and thanks to a perfect lap he obtained the access to the qualifying 2. In the qualifying 2 he was not able to use any slipstream, thus the time obtained, equal to 1’49.226, represents a good performance, that allows us to hope in a good race. 1.464 s is the gap from the leader of the qualifying.
Let us leave the floor to the protagonists of this qualifying.
Romano Fenati:”The qualifying have not been really good, but I am happy about the race pace. Unfortunately, throughout the session all the pilots were fixed waiting and to not be the first of the group I came back to the pit. Hence I did the pit lane and then I went alone. Unfortunately the position on the grid is not so good, but I am satisfied anyway with the setting of the bike. Tomorrow it will be necessary to start off well, in order to remain in the leading group.”
Alonso Lopez: “I am happy because I think that we are doing good steps forward. I am really confident with the bike and I can do good times alone. This is really important, because tomorrow I have a lot of rhythm for the race. I will not start off really close from the leader but I hope to do a good take off and to overtake some pilots. This is crucial, because I think that there will be a big group upfront and it is important to be in this group.”
Max Biaggi – Team Owner: “Unfortunately in these qualifying we did not collect what we deserved. The slip-streams in Moto3 are crucial and they are even more important in a so fast track. Even if Romano obtained a position on the grid which is rather far from the leader, he showed off a good pace. I hope that tomorrow he will be able to arrive in the leading group and to try to fight for the positions that count. Alonso, after having passed the Q1, in an excellent way unfortunately he did not succeed to repeat the performance in the second qualifying. I believe that tomorrow he will redeem himself, finalizing all the good work showed off today.”
