19 August 2022 – Red Bull Ring – Spielberg – Austria
The Friday of the Austrian Grand Prix closes with a great result for both our drivers.
Free practice 1 was held with a wet track and this affected the results. Our two drivers did not take unnecessary risks and at the end of the forty minutes of the session they got familiar with the new layout, characterized by the chicane before turn 2.
Ayumu finished 14th, while John was 26th.
The second session took place with a dry track and with a temperature that reached 27 º C on the asphalt. The times lowered, and our drivers reached the top six.
John at the last of the sixteen laps got the time of 1’41.823 to 0.049 s from the leader of the combined D. Foggia. The performance of our British driver has increased progressively and thanks to this result John reached the provisional Q2.
Less than three tenths behind, in sixth position, we find Ayumu, with a time of 1’42.085 and a gap of 0.311 s. Also our Japanese driver completed sixteen laps.
Here are the words of John, Ayumu and Max Biaggi, our Team Owner.
JOHN MCPHEE : “It was nice to finish today overall in P3. In FP1 I didn’t have a good feeling on the bike, I was missing something. We were able to improve the feeling in the dry conditions although I still feel that maybe there are one or two points that we can work on for tomorrow, to make the lap time more comfortably. It the good thing is that even with things not at 100% we are still fast so, we have some work to do. Overall we are going in the right direction and I am happy to be at the front after this first day.”
AYUMU SASAKI : “It was a very good first day. FP1 was in wet condition. I just took it easy after the injury, but I felt good on the bike. On the dry condition I felt immediately very good. The new chicane is very interesting, it makes it a little bit more difficult. We got P6 overall and our pace is very good. I don’t know which weather is going to be tomorrow, but I think in any conditions we are capable of fighting in the front, so hopefully we can have a good qualifying so that it will make the Long lap Penalty a little bit easier.”
MAX BIAGGI – TEAM OWNER : “Both of our drivers in top six, it represents a good start for us. Certainly, the work has just begun, and the weather variable will put a strain on the work of technicians and drivers in the rest of the weekend. We have to stay focused, to be able to do a good qualifying and to be able to refine the setup in view of the race.”
